“Listen, Mom, I gotta go—early day tomorrow and all that, what with starting classes.” Suzanne begged off, fingering the joint she was itching to light.
The second her mother’s fake kisses were blown down the line, Suzanne hung up the phone and tossed it to the side, then brought her salvation to her lips, lighting it and inhaling deeply. Holding the smoke, she gave a silent nod to Daddy’s blank check which also made sure her one real friend, Mary Jane, would be by her side as long as Suzanne needed her. She didn’t need much, but had a slight addiction to the spicy herbal mix she liked to smoke. The effects of the dope also helped keep the crippling back twinges from killing her.
With the thick smoke filling her lungs, her mother’s parting words replayed in her head. “Sorry, dear, I know your birthday is next week, but Daddy and I have a previous engagement that we simply cannot get out of. We have this... thing... in Greece. Very big. We’ll call you when we get back. Oh, and Daddy’s sending you a check for your birthday. Pick out something nice, dear.” She exhaled and started laughing. Like she wanted to spend her twenty-second birthday with them anyway. No thanks.
