Title: Chosen

Series: The Chosen Chronicles, #1

Pages: 275

Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance
Date published: January 8, 2015

Synopsis:
Cal Reynolds has always been special. He comes from a long line of Hunters – a group of humans gifted with exceptional strength, speed, and magical ability. The Hunters’ purpose is to protect the world from demons from the Underworld. But even among this select group, Cal stands out.

When his strained relationship with his father causes Cal to leave the Hunters, a series of events is set in motion that causes him to discover secrets about himself, his family, and his future that he could never have imagined. In the midst of trying to decipher the pieces left from this chaos, Cal reconnects with Gabrielle Morgan, the only girl he’s ever loved, after a nearly seven year estrangement.

But Cal is Chosen – and that has far reaching ramifications, not only on himself but on those he loves as well. When Cal is faced with the ultimate deception, he begins to realize that he will need to choose where his loyalties, and his love, lie…and the seduction of darkness is almost overwhelmingly alluring…

EXCERPT
I was probably going to die.I really shouldn't be surprised. After all, when you hunted evil, supernatural creatures, getting killed was sort of an occupational hazard. But I was good at what I did – really good. And I figured I was still going to die.I watched the Abassy, an iron-toothed man-eating demon, approach riding a dragon. The Abassy was seriously tough shit…and it only had one arm, one eye, and one leg. To make matters worse, its mount was a two-headed, eight-legged, two-tailed dragon. These things were supposed to solely be creatures of the Underworld so how the hell they had gotten out, I had no idea. I had been trying to banish them back, which, despite how powerful the Abassy was, should have been fairly simple. Only what should have been a pretty quick mystical banishment had turned into an all-out clusterfuck of a fight. I laid in the dirt that was slowly being turned to mud, courtesy of all the blood seeping out of my way-too-many wounds. I knew I was in bad shape when I tried to lift my left arm and couldn't feel anything on that entire side of my body. Breathing slowly in and out, I focused on the sweet musk of the earth all around me and ignored the prevalent metallic twang of all the blood (MY blood) that was every-freaking-where. Forcing myself to stand up…or at least stand hunched over, I decided to wait for the Abassy to make a move rather than expend energy in chasing it.Clearly I had caused some injury to the Abassy and its dragon since I could see that they limped towards me but, even with my enhanced vision, between the pitch black of the night and the dark skin of the creatures I couldn't see any obvious wound. I figured I had one decent attack left before my body just completely gave up. My right hand gripped the banishment crystal and I willed my left hand to curl around my dagger. The crystal was going to have to do most of the work so my best hope was to distract with the weapon – thankfully I'd had a semblance of foresight to bring an enchanted blade along, which should sting the Abassy even more, provided I could make direct contact. The Abassy stopped and we engaged in a Western-movie-type stare down. For a nanosecond, I almost felt like John Wayne. But before I had time to blink, it rushed at me. I didn't think, I didn't breathe. I stabbed blindly with my dagger hand and slid my right hand up towards the Abassy's chest, underneath the Abassy's stretched out arm, while twisting my body to avoid the dragon. Searing, jolting pain shot through my body as the Abassy's dragon clamped down on my right leg with two of its own. I heard muscle rip and felt bones snap. My world started to go dark – even I couldn't stay conscious after the vicious ass-kicking I had received.

Excerpt

He scanned her face as if he were looking for the answers to solve the world’s deepest mysteries. “Cali?”
“How many times?” she asked. “How many times and then you just close down and act like nothing happened?”
“Three,” he said, his voice flat.
She stepped closer and looked into his eyes. She hadn’t expected him to answer her. Or if he did, she was expecting something more along the lines of, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
Matthew met her gaze with firm determination. “In my office.”
He took a step closer. “In your office.”
Cali watched the movement of his throat as he swallowed. The room seemed to be getting warmer.
Matthew took another step, closing the distance between them. “Last night.”
Her heart was hammering in her ears. He was right in front of her now. Close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off him. Close enough that she could smell the cologne he was wearing.
“That’s how many times I’ve almost kissed you,” he whispered, his breath ghosting across her face, his lips mere inches from hers.
She couldn’t pull her gaze away from his.
“Four.” He said it so soft she could barely hear.
Cali’s heart skipped a beat and it felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the room.
He tilted his head forward, bringing their lips even closer. “Tell me no, Cali. Tell me to stop.”

About The Author

Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.
At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.
Since then Sherri has published several novels, many of which have hit the top 100 in their category on Amazon. Writing has become a creative outlet that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. #TeaserTuesday #Author_Author Lissa Bryan

This week, Lissa Bryan is giving us a sneak peek at the fourth installment in the End of All Things series!

It started with a virus...

A generation has passed since the pandemic known only as the Infection ended the world as we know it. The world in which Taylor struggles to survive is a harsh and brutal place.

Here is a sample of the first chapter, and the beginning of a new journey.

She woke to the sound of screams and gunfire.

Taylor sat up, looking around her darkened room, holding her breath as she listened. For a moment, all she heard was the pounding of her own heart and then there was another shriek, this one not far away. Taylor rolled out of her bed and crouched low, heading for the window. She used the side of her fist to rub away some of the grime that coated the glass on the inside, though the outside was still clouded and all she could see an ominous orange glow and wavering shadows.
Oh no oh no…
Feet pounded down the sidewalk in front of her room and the shadowy outline of human forms darted past her windows. Someone was crying, horrible sharp sobs.
Taylor crept to the other side of the window where a hole had been broken out of one of the panes long ago. She slowly pulled out the rag stuffed in the gap and peered out.  A body lay in the parking lot outside her window and she smothered a gasp by pressing a hand to her mouth. The bloodied head was turned away from her, but she recognized that tangle of blonde curls and the green sweat pants the body wore. It was Grace, and she was dead.

Tears burned in Taylor’s eyes, but she forced them down, swallowing hard. A loud bang drew her gaze, and she saw a man with a rifle kick in the door of a room on the opposite side of the parking lot. He charged in and emerged seconds later, dragging a woman by her hair.
Time to go. Taylor didn’t know what was going on, but she could figure that out later.
She crawled over to her bed, keeping low, and reached beneath the mattress. Years ago, a large hole had been gouged out of the underside. It made a perfect cavity for stashing her bag to keep it safe from thieves.
She heard a bang next door and a louder scream and ran for the bathroom. As her hand touched the knob, she glanced back at the dresser.

Shadows flickered outside her window.
I can’t—
After a moment of hesitation, Taylor bit her lip and darted back to the dresser. The pulls had long ago been stolen or broken off, and she had to scratch with her fingers at the sides of the drawer to get a grip. She finally managed to yank it open and scooped out the small box inside, tucking it below her arm as she ran for the bathroom. She shut the door behind her, flipping its pathetically flimsy lock.
She hoisted herself up onto the toilet tank and pushed the transom window up. The glass had been broken out long ago and was now covered with pieces of plastic she easily pushed from the frame.
She peeked outside but didn’t see anyone. Smoke stung her nose and the sky was orange with the reflected flames, getting brighter with every moment. There was the loud retort of a gunshot and a scream cut off with horrifying abruptness. Taylor shoved the small box into her bag and looped it over her shoulder.
With a small grunt of effort, Taylor hauled herself up and crammed her body through the window, not taking time to care about the scrapes and scratches from the metal frame. She fell with a thud to the pavement below and winced as she wobbled to her feet.

She should make for the woods, she decided. Run like hell and don’t look back until she knew she was safe, but to get there, she had to pass through the end of town, and she already saw signs of chaos down the street.
Copper, the owner of the bar on the corner, knelt in the middle of the street while a man with a machete stood over him, watching as others carried out boxes of bottles from the building to a waiting wagon. The flames glinted off his ginger hair and Taylor saw that Copper was crying, his shoulders shaking as he wept.
Not that way, then.
Taylor crept along the back wall of the motel, crouched low, keeping her head down. She reached the corner and peeked around the edge.
A man stood there, grinning. “Hands up.”
There weren’t any options at the moment. Taylor complied. “Please, don’t hurt me.”
“I got another one!” the man shouted back over his shoulder. “Come here.”
Taylor nodded. She started to stand up, but lost her balance and toppled over. With an exhalation of impatience, the man stuck a hand out to grab her. Taylor felt a strange zing of energy bolt through her.
Now.
She grabbed the back of his hand and before he could react, twisted it hard, cupping her other hand over his elbow and forcing it flat, against the bend. Before he could react to being thrown off balance, she rammed her foot down on the side of his kneecap. His roar of pain downed out the crunching of bone. He collapsed to the ground and Taylor swept up the baseball bat he’d dropped. She brought it down on the side of his head as hard as she could and spun around, looking to see if his scream had drawn anyone’s attention.
No one appeared in the gap between buildings.
Panting, she wiped her sweaty face and looked back down at the man’s body again, sprawled at her feet. He was wearing a t-shirt, and on his right forearm were a crudely tattooed series of numbers, a zero, at the wrist, a nine above it and an eight in the center of his forearm. Each number below the eight had several vertical lines through it.
“Oh my God, it’s the Nine,” Taylor whispered. For a moment, her knees felt wobbly.
Taking several quick breaths, she reminded herself she didn’t have time to panic. She looked around again to see if she’d been spotted and then ran toward an old, rusted dumpster behind the next building.

The Nine. It can’t be the Nine. Oh my God, I’ve—
Her own breathing was the loudest sound and she struggled to get it under control. Her hands were shaking so hard it was difficult to grip the bat. She could see the entire roof of the motel was now covered in a sheet of flame, and from the columns of smoke, it wasn’t the only building on fire.
She had to get to the gap in the fence so she could make it to the woods. She would be safe there. She could hide there.

The first three books in the End of All Things series are now available in a single volume set for only $9.99.

Privilege: Book 2 S.T.U.D. Series

Privilege_270

Bianca Bellini Wilde, a brainy and beautiful psychologist, grew up in a home where the only things she could count on were the volatility of her Sicilian mother’s temperament and the here-today-gone-tomorrow behavior of her American father. Now Bianca lives a safe, predictable life. She has a career, a perfect studio apartment in a perfect Manhattan neighborhood and, of course, she has her family. If she does ever add anything to her existence it’ll be a safe marriage, probably to one of the very nice, very safe men she dates, a condo not far from where she currently lives, and the requisite two children.
Who could possibly need anything else? Planning is everything. Chayton Olivieri, a tough, arrogant-as-hell warrior in a Special Forces military unit, was raised on a Sioux reservation by a mother who was a meth addict and a father who got even with the world by beating the crap out of Chay. Chay learned early on that the only person he could depend on was himself. That was what won him a college degree; it was what got him into the SEALs and then into STUD—Special Tactical Units Division. Chay owns a ramshackle beach house near the STUD base in Santa Barbara, California. He leads a life of danger and excitement, and he has all the beautiful women he wants. Who could possibly need anything else? Risk is everything. Bianca has just begun her career by joining a group practice. She meets with clients in a suite of rooms on a quiet street in the East Sixties. She’s good at what she does. Helping people conquer their demons is important—and if sometimes those demons seem nothing more than the selfish dissatisfactions of people with too much money and too much time on their hands, well, who is she to judge? Chay’s missions take him from the mountains of Afghanistan to the streets of Mogadishu. He excels at what he does. It’s demanding. It’s exciting. It’s for a cause he believes in—most of the time. And if he’s not sure what he’ll do with his life years from now when he’s no longer a STUD, at least he knows what he won’t do. Settling down in one place, marriage, kids... Great for other people, but never for him. Especially not for him. As different as they are, the heat Bianca and Chay generate is impossible to deny. The raw sexuality of it panics Bianca and makes Chay long for more. Still, after a couple of quick encounters, they both know it’s best to stay away from each other. And they do—until Bianca becomes the target of a serial killer, and the only man who can possibly save her is Chay. Which is when things begin to get really, really complicated.

COVER REVEAL: She Dims the Stars by Amber L. Johnson

SUMMARY

Who is Audrey Byrd?

Ask her ex-best friend, Cline Somers, and he’ll tell you that she’s the girl who inexplicably stopped talking to him when they were fifteen years old, leaving him with nothing but questions and bitterness for the better part of the next six years.

Ask his roommate, Elliot Clark, and he would say that Audrey is the enigmatic girl who randomly showed up outside a window one day and turned his whole world upside down in a matter of moments.

Ask Audrey herself and she’ll tell you that she has no idea who she is, because her entire life is a lie. However, the older she gets the more she needs answers about who she really is.

What she discovers is a tangled web of secrets better left in the dark.

Some truths do more harm than good.

***Recommended for readers 18+ due to sensitive subject matter, language and situations.***

EXCERPT

It’s started to sprinkle, and we’ve ridden five rides so far, walked the entire length of the fairgrounds, and watched a group of nine year olds tap dance in skirts bigger than my bedroom. The smile on Audrey’s face is enormous, and I can’t stop staring at her.
She’s holding a funnel cake in one hand and a custard in the other while I balance a corn dog and massive soda myself. Cline and September have gotten on the Ferris wheel, and it will be at least another ten minutes before they make it to the top and all the way back around. We head away from the lights and sounds toward the grass and rocks of a field just beyond the parameters of the fairgrounds. There’s a slight breeze as we go to sit, and Audrey’s skirt flies up, making her laugh and attempt to grab it with both of her full hands. She’s unsuccessful and ends up landing on her ass gracelessly, powdered sugar sliding from the plate onto her lap in the process.
“Figures. I’m over here trying to act like a lady, and all the elements are against me.” She shakes her fist at the sky in false anger.
“You don’t have to act like a lady,” I tell her just as I turn to look and see that she’s taken a huge bite out of the funnel cake and has white powder all over her cheeks and under her nose. “I retract that statement. Maybe trying a little bit would be helpful.”
Her laugh causes more powdered sugar to go flying into the air. She passes the food over to me, and we share it until it’s all gone and we’ve cleaned up the best we can, though her red dress has spots that won’t come out without a good washing. The sprinkles of water are doing little to help with the situation. They simply disappear into the fabric as soon as they make contact.
We stare at the lights of the fair beyond us, such a stark contrast to the dark night sky, obliterating any stars that are shining above it. It reminds me of how I feel when I’m around Audrey. How loud and bright and chaotic she can be. How she can swallow the entire environment around her until she’s the only focal point. She could dim even the brightest of stars if she’d just get out of her head.
My attention is back on her as my thoughts turn in my head and I can see her staring back up at me, the flashing lights in the distance reflected in her dark eyes. I lean forward and she doesn’t move, just keeps watching as I advance.
“You want me to kiss you so badly right now,” I say.
Her eyebrows draw together and she snorts, her eyes darting away instead of holding steady with my own. “No, I don’t.”
“Yes, you do. I can see it. But, I’m not going to. Not until you ask me. Because I think that’s a thing for you—asking people to do stuff. Asking for things. So, when you finally decide you’re ready for that kiss, you just let me know.”
She leans back on her elbows and looks up at the sky, her ponytail dragging along the grass as her eyes close and the rain hits her face lightly. “Nah. You’ll be waiting forever and a day, Elliot. I’m not gonna ask you to kiss me. We should keep it just like this. All this yearning. This build up to nothing. Will they? Won’t they?” Her eyes open and she looks over her shoulder at me, teasing, but her face is serious. “We’re gonna be the greatest love story never told.”

AUTHOR BIOS AND LINKS:

M.B. Feeney
M. B. Feeney is an army brat who finally settled down in Birmingham, UK with her other half, two kids and a dog. Currently at university studying for her BA (Hons) in primary teaching, she procrastinates on her assignments by listening to music of all genres and trying to get ‘just one more paragraph’ written on whichever WIP is open. She is also a serious doodler and chocoholic. Writing has been her one true love ever since she could spell, and publishing is the final culmination of her hard work and ambition.
Her publishing career began with two novellas, and she currently has multiple projects under way, in the hopes that her portfolio of what have been described as “everyday love stories for everyday people” will continue to grow. Always having something on the go can often lead to block which eventually gets dissolved by good music and an even better book.
Her main reason for writing is to not only give her readers enjoyment, but also to create a story and characters that stay with readers long after the book is finished, and possibly make someone stop and think “what if . . . ”

L.J Harris
L. J. HARRIS is a mother of teenage twin boys who she loves with all her heart. Her family is her life, her soul, and the very reason she gets out of bed every day. Coming a close second to her family is her writing.
She only just discovered a passion for writing in the past five or so years. She’d always written little poems in birthday cards for family members, but that was as far as her writing aspirations went...until she decided to write poems and give them to family members as homemade gifts.
It was then a spark was lit, and ever since, she hasn’t been unable to switch off the urge to write.
After a close family member fell ill, she began questioning what she wanted and searching for answers. Unable to sleep one night, she sat up and typed out her feelings on the laptop. Her husband read what she’d written and encouraged her to write more. It was then she knew she wanted to share her thoughts with others. She began with writing what she knew—her life story, but couldn't get into it. Instead, she decided to write about something not based on fact, but fiction, and wrote a dream sequence which she showed to her family. They encouraged her to expand on it, and she hasn’t stopped since.
L.J. Harris discovered that as much as enduring pain, loss, betrayal, or any other negative thing in our lives can be devastating, if she hadn't experienced them for herself, she not only wouldn't have found some lifelong friends, she doubts she would have been able to write the feelings of anguish and loss that some of her characters have had to endure.
L.J. has been previously published and has shared several online stories and looks forward to continuing to share her work.

She is a major fan of music with very eclectic taste, listening to Delta Goodrem through to Fightstar, Dvicio through to 3 Doors Down.
Sarah thrives to add mystery to the romance in all of her projects, spending many evenings and late nights when her four young children are tucked up in bed to let the words pour onto the pages and the characters inside her mind completely take over.
