An EXCERPT from SLOTS by R.E. Hargrave

The bars of Las Vegas have always been my favorite hunting ground. With their hustle and bustle, their crowds of self-absorbed patrons who are hell bent on winning big while being negligent of their surroundings, they’re perfect. I could be nobody, or everybody, nondescript as I was in my dark bland apparel. My true colors showed beneath, though—to anyone who had the fortitude to open their eyes, and look.

On this particular night I found myself sitting in one of the numerous casinos, sipping my club soda while the lights flashed and the noise levels rose in direct proportion to the diminishing sobriety levels. My face was relaxed, cheeks dusted in a five o’clock shadow, and dark locks unkempt so blending into my surroundings was effortless. I was just your average guy, good-looking enough not to repel, but not one of those drop-dead gorgeous types who turned heads or made jaws drop. The people around me couldn’t know I was wearing my favorite SpongeBob boxers; I doubt they would’ve cared if they had. This was Vegas after all. For me, there was something arousing about having the childish fabric hugging my junk. All black on the surface—black tee, black jeans, black cowboy boots—the shock of color below was a testament to how much fun I could be.

I smiled.
