Jakob lay awake a long time despite being exhausted. His mind refused to let go of the puzzle of Kate Holt. Everything about her intrigued him, from her innocent responses to his advances, to the way she suddenly went cold in the blink of an eye. He looked forward to the chance to observe and study her, to learn all those intricacies. When he finally slept, dreams of a woman with long dark hair and light eyes tormented him through endless scenes, tempting him beyond reason. Mercurial moods went from hot to cold in a flash, leaving him desperate for more. Waking in the pre-dawn with his heart pounding and a raging hard-on striving toward orgasm warned of a short temper for the day ahead. Sexual frustration was so not his best mood.

I reached across the table and ran my index finger across the soft skin of her wrist. “Let me feel you up a little like a sophomore who just got his license.”

I loved it when she laughed because it wasn’t anything fake. Her entire body shook when she giggled, and when it was really funny there was no sound. Right now she was probably calling all the dogs in the alley. “Yeah, okay. We can do that.” She smoothed out her hair when she’s collected herself, and I realized that I hadn’t noticed it before, but she didn’t wear ponytails anymore. It made me want to tug on the ends, fist it at the back of her neck.
